Taking Back Lives is a non-profit organization founded by Bradenton, Florida, high-school student Cassandra Yoder. At the age of sixteen, Cassandra spent a month volunteering in Malawi, Africa, where she observed an enormous need for educational support and founded the organization with hopes of providing such opportunities to the children of Malawi. After a great deal of research and several return visits to Malawi, Taking Back Lives is collaborating with the non-profit organization, Ripple Africa, to build a double classroom block for a primary school in the Nkhata Bay district.
As a primarily youth-led organization, an equally important aspect of Taking Back Lives’ overall mission is the integration of local youth into our school-building project. Through our Making Your Mark clubs, not only will students be raising funds for the school, but they will also learn about global issues facing much of the world today, and develop and lead service projects of their choosing within the community. ‘Empowering youth to promote change’ is the true essence of Taking Back Lives.
As part of the Making Your Mark program, this year’s walkathon is challenging youth in the surrounding communities to take a step forward to ensure better futures for the children of Malawi. Through participation, students will receive a Taking Back Lives walkathon shirt, prizes, free giveaways, community service hours, and most importantly, play a vital role in the building of a classroom for Malawian students. With a goal of $50,000, Taking Back Lives plans to begin construction of a double classroom block by the summer of 2010, with all the money raised during the walkathon going directly towards this project.
