In one of the poorest countries in the world, the children of Malawi, Africa, are faced with an existence of poverty, disease, and suffering. Due to a lack of educational opportunities and resources, most of these children find it impossible to break away from the way of life in which they were born.
Taking Back Lives was founded as a result of a trip to Malawi, Africa, where 16-year-old Cassandra Yoder volunteered at the Dzanja La Chifundo Orphanage. Upon her return, she felt compelled to do something beyond her one-month visit, and after much research and deliberation, decided that education would have the greatest impact. Subsequently, Taking Back Lives began in order to provide educational opportunities to the children of Malawi.
Since that time, Taking Back Lives has realized that an equally important aspect of what we hope to accomplish is to integrate American youth in our school-building project in Africa, while also providing them with the resources in which they can become civically engaged in their own communities. Taking Back Lives has truly evolved into one that is youth-led and it is our goal to empower youth with the necessary skills to promote change both here and throughout the world.
